About Esther

Esther entered the scene after Queen Vashti lost favor with the king when she refused to come to him during a very large banquet that had lasted an entire week, and included everyone from the least to the greatest in the city (Esther 1:5) Queen Vashti’s actions were highly disrespectful to the king and the women she influenced as queen. (Esther 1:16-20)

The king commanded that Queen Vashti lose her position because of her misconduct, and be replaced with someone who could fulfill the role as queen and live respectfully with the king. A call went out to all the young women who had saved themselves for marriage in the land. (Esther 2:2-4)

Esther had neither father nor mother, but had been taken in like a daughter by her cousin Mordecai. (Esther 1:7) Esther was taken to the kings palace among many other young women, and found favor as soon as she arrived. After 12 months of beauty treatments and waiting her turn to see the king, Esther found favor with him as well, and was made queen. (Esther 2:12-17) There was even a holiday of gift giving commemorated in Esther’s honor! (Esther 2:18)

What Esther teaches us about true beauty

During her reign as queen, Esther demonstrated good courage by putting her life on the line to stand up for the rights and lives of her people. In the face of death, Esther was not afraid to do what she knew was right. Esther was also a woman who prayed and fasted, showing her genuine love for the Lord and his authority. (Esther 4:15-16)

Esther was outwardly beautiful and took care of herself and her body; along with that, her inner spirit prevailed and spurred her forth to accomplish the Lord’s will for her life. Unlike the former queen Vashti, Esther was not ruled by pride or disrespect. Throughout, Esther shows respect for both Mordecai, who raised Esther as a father, and the king. Ultimately, it is this attitude that saves an entire nation. (Esther 5:1-7)
